Should I get these graded?

I don't usually do numismatics, but I just bought 7 SAE proofs dated 1986, 1994, 95, 96, 97, 98, and 99 for $14 each off Craigslist. They are in the original mint plastic capsule, but missing the cardboard box and COA. The capsules have minor scratches and wear, but the coins have never been touched.

Would it be worth the money to get these graded? I know the mid-90's were low mintages and these may grade at PF-69 or PF-70. Since they lack the COA, the slab would confirm authenticity. If I do get them graded is it better to go PCGS or NGC?

If you were to get them "graded" I would definitely go for PCGS. They are preferred by more people than anyone else.

As for getting them graded, it could be "questionable" for any coin worth less than $100 as you may never get all your money back when it comes time to sell. If you like how the PCGS holders look or you want it for you collection then by all means go for it. Otherwise, you may want to think about it.

I did this last year with about 20 coins.

Check the PCGS price guide http://www.pcgs.com/prices/ and see what a grade 88 or 69 goes for. It's practically impossible to get a 70. The graders sit there with a microscope and they will find flaws that the human eye cannot find.

Judge the price of a 68 or 69 against your acquisition cost plus the grading cost,.

if you are planning on selling the coins right away, there's a pretty good deal at teletrade.com. they give you a big break on the grading fees in you agree to sell the coin through them.

Re: Should I get these graded?

JMHO but instead of spending the money to get them graded, I'd just buy the boxes and COA and keep them as is. Sellers online often sell boxes from coins they get graded or dealers at local shows often have them. I bought a replacement box for a 1/2 oz AGE proof coin from a show dealer because the box I had was beat. I knew ahead of time that the box was not good but I also knew I could replace it for about $5.

First box with shipping is usually more but add other boxes and it averages out to under $5 per box. That's alot less than grading and it's nice to just have a SAE proof boxed with COA.

For example (and I do not know this seller)...I would e-mail or call and see if they have the boxes you need. You might get them all shipped together and bingo...all boxed SAE proofs :wink: No one would ever know otherwise. If this seller doesn't work out, just do a search for Silver Eagle Box or Silver Eagle Box No Coin.

Since you mentioned it, I have 2 cases and COA's for sale, was going to put them up on ebay next week.

1- 2000 1 oz Platinum Eagle proof, (black case and box)
1- 1996 1/10th oz Gold Eagle proof (blue case and box)

I'll take $4.00 a piece, plus shipping. PM me if anyone is interested.

Grading of modern bullion coins is a scam in my opinion
